For students: whether you are a pre-OT student or on your last fieldwork rotation, welcome to this amazing profession!
I learned about occupational therapy in high school, through a healthcare careers exploration program called Explorer Post. Out of all the professions I observed, the value of using meaningful activities for therapy and outcomes intrigued me.
Throughout college, I fast tracked to OT, gaining volunteer and observation hours, pursuing study abroad opportunities and fellowships, took the GRE and transferred into a master’s occupational therapy program at 90 credits.
When I say fast-track, I mean FAST. And this is not the only way for students to pursue OT. Sometimes people find out about OT towards the end of their college years or choose it as a second career. That’s the beauty of occupational therapy. You choose your path.

Take Up Space. Unapologetically. When I started my doctorate program, the director, a black woman whose voice reminded me of Michelle Obama, called me to discuss the program. And even when the program seemed difficult, or near impossible, I never felt like I was in the wrong place. Because I could physically see someone who looked like me. Who’d been that, and DID THAT. So I take up space. Because we are trailblazers. We are black excellence. We are black history right now.
