Looking for your first occupational therapy job? You’ve gotten to the interview, but how you do know if the job is a good fit for you?
- Evidence. Prepare questions ahead of time and be mindful of responses. Does the interviewer provide concrete examples?
- Self-Reflection. While interviewing, observe the characteristics of the environment. Will it stimulate you, challenge you, or try to break out/lead to burn out?
- Body Language. How does the interviewer respond to potential co-workers and clients? How do potential co-workers respond to you?
- Non-negotiables. Do you crave fast-paced, or a more easy-going environment? Do you hate sitting in traffic or do you enjoy listening to a podcast or two on the way home? Consider your non-negotiables ahead of time and stand by them.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, or like it’s too good to be true, trust that.
Consider the whole package. Be sure to ask about salary/pay, benefits, mentorship, hours, and opportunity for growth prior to accepting a position. If there is a contract or additional terms to sign, be sure to read all the fine print.
Whether you’re on the job hunt as a new graduate, or an occupational therapist transitioning to a new setting, these strategies are necessary!
The biggest takeaways are to reflect on what works for you, and to trust your gut. It’s ok to learn and move on.
If you’re not sure what will work for you, consider if the position will have flexibility to grow into what you need!
